What Is Calcium Carbide Used For?

What are the uses of calcium carbide?

The uses of calcium carbide mainly include the following aspects:

Organic synthesis: Acetylene generated by the reaction of calcium carbide with water can synthesize many organic compounds, such as synthetic rubber, artificial resin, acetone, ketene, carbon black, etc.

Metal processing: Acetylene-oxygen flame is widely used in metal welding and cutting.

Desulfurization agent: Calcium carbide itself can be used as a desulfurization agent in the steel industry.

Gold mining and non-ferrous metal industry: When heating powdered calcium carbide with nitrogen, the reaction generates calcium cyanamide, that is, lime nitrogen. The cyanide melt generated by heating lime nitrogen with salt is used in gold mining and non-ferrous metal industry.

Lighting: The generated gas is flammable when exposed to fire and can be used for lighting.

Production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC): The calcium carbide method uses calcium carbide (calcium carbide CaC2) to produce acetylene (C2H2) when it meets water. Acetylene is synthesized with hydrogen chloride (HCl) to produce vinyl chloride monomer (CH2CHCl), and then vinyl chloride is polymerized to produce polyvinyl chloride -[CHCHCI]n-.

Miner lighting: In the old days, miners would put calcium carbide into iron cans and use the generated acetylene (C2H2) to make calcium carbide lamps.

The above are the main uses of calcium carbide. It should be noted that calcium carbide has strong chemical activity and needs to be used with extreme caution.
