Tungsten wire production process---die forging
The tungsten rod is strong now, but is very brittle at room temperature. It can be made more ductile by raising its temperature to between 1200'C and 1500'C.
At this temperature, the bar can pass through the die forging machine. A press is a piece of equipment that reduces the diameter of a bar by passing it through a die designed to hammer the bar at a rate of about 10,000 times per minute.
Typically, press forging reduces the diameter by approximately 12% each time. Forging elongates the crystals to form a fibrous structure. Although this is ideal for ductility and strength of the finished product, the rod must be stress relieved by reheating at this point. Continue swaging until the rod reaches 0.25 to 0.10 inches.
