How to make metallic silicon?

The basic process for producing silicon has remained the same for decades: quartz or gravel (SiO2) is mixed with a carbon source and superheated in a submersible furnace.

As the mixture heats, the carbon reacts with the oxygen in the quartz to form CO gas, which reduces the quartz to 99% silicon in its molten form.
