The process of making single-crystal silicon wafers is called the Czochralski method, which uses molten silicon at high temperatures to grow single crystals. First, high-purity silicon is heated to its melting point and a small crystal is lowered on the surface of the melt. Next, the small crystals are slowly lifted and the melt spun, allowing it to gradually solidify and grow into a full single-crystal silicon rod. Finally, the monocrystalline silicon rods are cut into thin slices to form monocrystalline silicon wafers.
