Zirconium can be used as a getter
Zirconium has limited uses except as a degassing, deoxidizing and alloying element in alloys of non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Zirconium is known to be an ingredient in mixtures for the manufacture of fireworks and is used as a getter in radio vacuum technology. Zirconium is highly corrosion-resistant and non-toxic compared to some other materials used in surgical tools, especially neurosurgery.
Zirconium has a high content in the earth's crust. In terms of abundance, zirconium occupies the 11th place among the elements in the periodic table, more abundant than copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Zirconium has long been considered a rare metal simply because for a long time it was not possible to obtain a pure enough metal that would make it plastic.
