What is magnesium?
Magnesium is a metallic element with the symbol Mg and atomic number 12. It belongs to Group IIA, an alkaline earth element on the periodic table. It is a silvery-white, lightweight, and ductile metal with a density of 1.74 g/cm³, a melting point of 650°C, and a boiling point of 1090°C.
In air, magnesium forms a thin oxide film on its surface, making it difficult for air to react with it and causing it to lose its luster. Magnesium is one of the most abundant light metals on Earth, with abundant reserves, ranking eighth in the universe and accounting for 2% of the abundance in the Earth's crust. Magnesium-containing minerals primarily come from dolomite, magnesite, magnesite, and olivine. Seawater and natural salt lake water are also rich sources of magnesium.
China is the world's richest country in magnesium resources, boasting a wide variety of magnesium ore types and a wide distribution, and ranks first in both reserves and production. Magnesium alloys offer high specific strength and stiffness, excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, excellent electromagnetic shielding, damping, vibration reduction, machinability, low processing costs, and easy recycling. Therefore, they are widely used in industries such as aerospace, missiles, automotive, and construction.
