Silicon carbide SIC88 is a carbide accidentally discovered in the laboratory by the American Acheson during the 1891 fused diamond experiment. At that time, he mistakenly thought it was a mixture of diamonds, so it was named emery.
It was developed by Acheson in 1893. The industrial smelting method of silicon carbide, also known as the Acheson furnace, is still in use today. The resistance furnace uses carbonaceous materials as the furnace core and energizes the mixture of quartz SiO2 and carbon to generate silicon carbide.

There are two commonly used basic varieties of silicon carbide: black silicon carbide SIC88 and green silicon carbide, both of which belong to α-SiC.
Black silicon carbide contains about 95% SiC, and its toughness is higher than green silicon carbide. It is mostly used to process materials with low tensile strength, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.
The abrasive tools used to make it are suitable for ultra-finishing of bearings, and can make the surface roughness from Ra32 ~ 0.16 microns to Ra0.04 ~ 0.02 micron.
