Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum is a compound of silicon and carbon with chemical formula SiC.
Silicon carbide is used in abrasives, in polishing and grinding. It is widely applied in applications calling for high endurance, such as automobile brakes, car clutches and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests. Electronic applications of silicon carbide are as light emitting diodes and sensors.
Silicon Carbide has a lower hardness and abrasive capacity than diamond and boron carbide. Yet because of its much lower cost when compared with diamond or B4C, it is widely used for grinding nonferrous materials, finishing tough and hard materials, as well as filling up ceramic parts.
Silicon Carbide is produced by heating silica sand and a carbon source, typically petroleum coke, to high temperatures in a furnace.
