Where does ferro silicon come from?
Ferro silicon is produced through the carbothermic reduction of silica (SiO2) and iron oxide (Fe2O3) in an electric arc furnace. The process involves the following steps:

Raw materials: The main components of ferro silicon production are silica (usually in the form of quartz) and iron oxide. These materials are mixed together in the desired proportions, depending on the silicon content required in the final product. Other additives such as carbonaceous materials, aluminum, and calcium may be included to achieve specific alloying effects.

Smelting: The mixture of raw materials is loaded into an electric arc furnace, which is a large refractory-lined container capable of withstanding high temperatures. The furnace is then heated using electric arcs generated between carbon electrodes and the charge.

Reduction: As the temperature rises in the furnace, the carbonaceous materials react with oxygen from the iron oxide and silica, resulting in the reduction of these compounds. This reduction process produces carbon monoxide gas and molten iron, while silicon is formed by the reduction of silica. The carbon monoxide gas escapes as a byproduct.

Alloy formation: The molten iron combines with the silicon to form ferro silicon. The composition of the ferro silicon can be adjusted by controlling the amounts of silica and iron oxide added initially.
Refining and casting: The molten ferro silicon is then refined to remove any impurities and adjusted to the desired composition. The refined alloy is poured into molds and cooled to solidify, forming the final product in the form of lumps, powders, or granules.
Ferro silicon production is mainly carried out in regions with access to abundant raw materials such as silica-rich quartz deposits and iron ore. Some of the major producers include China, Russia, Norway, Brazil, and the United States.
