What is the zirconium manufacturing process?
Zirconium comes primarily from the mineral zircon (zirconium silicate, or ZrSiO4). It is a by-product of titanium and tin mining. This element was not known to the world until 1789, when Klaproth discovered it in the jargon. Many subsequent attempts were made to isolate and produce high-purity zirconium.
The production of zirconium requires special techniques. Most metallic zirconium is produced from zircon by reducing zirconium chloride with metallic magnesium in the Kroll process. The production of zirconium requires hot rolling, cold rolling, extrusion, and even separation of zirconium and hafnium.
