What is the synthesis method of ferrosilicon nitride?

The main synthesis methods of ferrosilicon nitride include direct nitridation, carbon thermal reduction nitridation, vapor deposition, thermal decomposition, self-propagating high-temperature combustion synthesis, flash combustion synthesis, microwave synthesis, ferrosilicon melt nitridation, etc. The physical composition and structure of ferrosilicon nitride are different due to different synthesis methods and processes.

Flash combustion synthesis method

The flash combustion synthesis method (vertical continuous combustion synthesis method) was used in the field of metal nitridation in the early days and was recently introduced into the field of refractory materials to prepare ferrosilicon nitride. During the preparation process, the ferrosilicon alloy fine powder particles fully contact with the rising nitrogen gas flow to react, and the reaction releases a large amount of heat to maintain the self-sustaining reaction. The flash combustion synthesis process is highly efficient, the synthesized ferrosilicon nitride does not contain free silicon, the product has good purity, low cost, and is suitable for large-scale continuous production.

Self-propagating high-temperature combustion synthesis method

Self-propagating (SHS), also known as combustion synthesis, is a new technology that uses the self-heating and self-conduction process of high chemical reaction heat between reactants to synthesize materials. The ferrosilicon nitride prepared by the self-propagating high-temperature combustion synthesis method contains a large amount of Si2N2O and FexSi in addition to β-Si3N4 and α-Si3N4, among which the content of FexSi that is not completely nitrided is relatively high; the microstructure is a dense silicon nitride block, the surface of the block is covered with a Si2N2O film, there are fine crystalline silicon nitride crystals in the gaps of the block, and the iron-containing components are embedded in the dense block; the appearance structure is dense and the properties are stable. This process has the advantages of low production cost and more suitable for industrial production, but its operation process is strict, the process is complex, the nitriding reaction is difficult to control, and there are disadvantages such as high nitriding pressure, strict requirements on equipment, difficulty in continuous production and low output.

Carbon thermal reduction nitriding method

Researchers from China University of Geosciences use iron ore powder, quartz powder and coke powder as the main raw materials (the particle size is less than 0.3mm), add room temperature binder, mix them in a certain proportion, and carry out carbon thermal reduction nitriding sintering under a suitable temperature system. After cooling, the product is crushed and ground to obtain high-performance Fe-Si3N4 refractory raw materials that can be used in various gun mud refractory materials.

Direct nitriding method

The direct nitriding method is to directly use ferrosilicon powder for nitriding reaction at high temperature. It is a traditional preparation method with simple process, less equipment required, and low reaction temperature. It is a relatively simple and widely used experimental method in the nitriding reaction method. The disadvantages are low nitriding rate, long nitriding time and high energy consumption. In addition, to obtain a high content of β-Si3N4, it is necessary to nitride at high temperature for a long time, which greatly increases energy consumption.
