So what is ferrosilicon powder?
During the storage of ferrosilicon, the humidity of the air is too high, or it encounters water, etc., and the content of aluminum, calcium and phosphorus impurities is high. After a period of time, powdering may occur. The powdering phenomenon will cause ferrosilicon to produce a bad smell. This smell is toxic. In severe cases, it will cause combustion and other phenomena. This is the powdering of ferrosilicon.
Improper aluminum, phosphorus and calcium content in ferrosilicon will promote ferrosilicon powdering. When the aluminum and phosphorus content increase to a certain value at the same time, this ferrosilicon is prone to powdering in the air with high humidity. Some data point out that the phosphorus content in ferrosilicon is less than 0.04% and the aluminum content is less than 3%, which is not easy to produce powdering.
Ferrosilicon with low silicon content is often easy to powder. It may be that the temperature of FeSi, FeSi2 and other silicon and iron compounds in ferrosilicon decreases and the volume expands, causing ferrosilicon powdering. Ferrosilicon containing aluminum generates aluminum hydroxide and gas when it meets water, which is the main reason for ferrosilicon powdering. After pouring, the cooling rate of ferrosilicon is also related to the segregation degree of silicon. Fast cooling rate means that its segregation degree is relatively small. Small segregation degree is more likely to produce powdering. If the cooling rate is slow, vice versa. This is related to the thickness of ferrosilicon.
