Ferrovanadium (Fe-V), an alloy of iron (Fe) and vanadium (V) with vanadium content typically 35–80%, is a critical alloying additive in steel and superalloy production. It enhances steel's strength, hardness, wear resistance, and high-temperature performance. Key applications include:
• Tool Steels: Improves cutting efficiency and durability in high-speed steels.
• High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) Steels: Used in construction, pipelines, and automotive components to reduce weight while maintaining strength.
• Superalloys: Added to nickel- or cobalt-based alloys for jet engines, gas turbines, and industrial heating equipment, where heat resistance and creep resistance are vital.
• Spring Steels: Enhances elasticity and fatigue resistance in automotive springs and industrial springs.
Vanadium pentoxide flakes refer to a crystalline, flaky form of vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), a transition metal oxide. It is typically produced via precipitation from vanadium salt solutions (e.g., ammonium metavanadate) followed by calcination, or by decomposing vanadium oxychloride. The flakes are often orange-red, brittle, and have a layered structure. They serve as a key precursor in chemical synthesis, such as producing vanadium electrolytes for batteries or ceramic materials.
Ferrovanadium is primarily produced via two methods:
1. Aluminothermic Reduction: Vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) or vanadate ores are mixed with aluminum powder (a reducing agent) and a flux (e.g., calcium fluoride). The mixture is ignited, triggering an exothermic reaction:
3\text{V}_2\text{O}_5 + 10\text{Al} \rightarrow 6\text{V} + 5\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3 + \text{Heat}.
The resulting molten vanadium metal combines with added iron scrap to form ferrovanadium, which is cast into ingots.
2. Carbothermal Reduction: Vanadium ore (e.g., vanadinite, Pb₅(VO₄)₃Cl) is mixed with iron ore (or scrap) and coke (carbon) in an electric arc furnace. At high temperatures (~1,800°C), carbon reduces vanadium oxides to metallic vanadium, which alloys with iron to form ferrovanadium. Slag (containing oxides of calcium, aluminum, or silicon) is removed to purify the product.
