Ferro Silicon
What is the difference between ferrosilicon and metallic silicon?

Ferrosilicon is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is an iron-silicon alloy made by smelting in an electric furnace using coke, steel scraps, and quartz (or silica) as raw materials.

Uses of ferrosilicon:

(1) Ferrosilicon is a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry. In steelmaking, ferrosilicon is used for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation. Brick iron is also used as an alloying agent in steelmaking.

(2) In the cast iron industry, it is used as an inoculant and spheroidizer. In the production of ductile iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (to help precipitate graphite) and spheroidizer.

(3) In the production of ferroalloys, it is used as a reducing agent. Not only does the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very high, but the carbon content of high-silicon ferrosilicon is also very low. Therefore, high-silicon ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloy) is a commonly used reducing agent in the production of low-carbon ferroalloys in the ferroalloy industry.

(4) 75# ferrosilicon is often used in the high-temperature smelting process of magnesium in the Pijiang process. About 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon are consumed for every ton of magnesium produced, which plays a great role in the production of magnesium.

(5) Other uses. Ground or atomized ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspension phase in the mineral processing industry.

(6) It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry. High-silicon ferrosilicon can be used in the chemical industry to manufacture silicone and other products.

Metallic silicon is also called crystalline silicon or industrial silicon. Its main use is as an additive for non-ferrous alloys. Metallic silicon is a product smelted from quartz and coke in an electric furnace. The content of the main component silicon is about 98%, and the remaining impurities are iron, aluminum, calcium, etc.

The classification of metallic silicon is usually based on the content of the three main impurities of iron, aluminum and calcium contained in the metallic silicon component. According to the content of iron, aluminum and calcium in metallic silicon, metallic silicon can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, 411, 421, 3303, 3305, 2202, 2502, 1501, 1101, etc.
