What Is Ferro Vanadium Used for in Steel Production?
Vanadium functions as a strong carbide- and nitride-forming element in steel. When added via ferro vanadium, it contributes to two metallurgical effects that are central to modern high-performance steels:
Grain refinement. Vanadium precipitates formed during controlled cooling pin austenite grain boundaries, producing a finer ferrite grain structure in the final product. Finer grains improve the strength-toughness balance, a property required in structural steels, pipeline steels, and pressure-vessel plate.
Precipitation strengthening. Vanadium carbonitrides that remain in solution at rolling temperature and precipitate during subsequent cooling provide dispersion hardening. This mechanism allows steel producers to raise yield strength while maintaining ductility, which is particularly valuable in rebar, sheet, and long-product applications where weight reduction and safety margins must be balanced.
Because vanadium is added in relatively small quantities-typically in the range of a few kilograms per tonne of steel, depending on the target grade-ferro vanadium offers a practical way to dose this element precisely through the ladle or furnace route.
What Ferro Vanadium Grades Can You Supply?

- FeV50 – nominal vanadium content around 50 percent by weight, with iron as the balance. This grade is the standard choice for general alloy steel and structural steel applications where moderate vanadium additions are sufficient to meet property targets.
- FeV80 – nominal vanadium content around 80 percent by weight. The higher vanadium concentration means less bulk material is needed per heat to achieve the same vanadium addition level, which can be advantageous in high-alloy steel production or when furnace capacity is constrained.

What Is the Difference Between FeV50 and FeV80?
The distinction between FeV50 and FeV80 is straightforward: it is a difference in vanadium concentration, which translates into different handling economics and dosing behavior in the melt shop.
Vanadium content. FeV80 carries roughly 60 percent more vanadium per unit mass than FeV50. For a steelmaker targeting a fixed vanadium addition per tonne of liquid steel, the mass of FeV80 charged is correspondingly lower. This can reduce total ferroalloy bulk, simplify logistics, and lower the iron dilution introduced into the heat.
Alloy cost structure. Because FeV80 contains more vanadium per kilogram, its unit price per kilogram is higher than FeV50, but the cost per unit of vanadium added is the metric that matters for procurement decisions. The relative economics shift with vanadium market prices and freight costs, so we recommend buyers evaluate both grades against their current melt recipe and total landed cost.
Application fit. FeV50 is typically specified for structural steels, rebar, and general engineering grades. FeV80 is more commonly chosen for tool steels, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) plate, and specialty products where tighter control over residual elements is required and lower addition mass is preferred.
Both grades are produced to industry-typical chemical tolerances. Exact composition ranges, including maximum allowable levels of impurities such as carbon, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus, are provided on a lot-specific basis and are subject to confirmation before shipment.
Which Steel Industries Use Ferro Vanadium?
Ferro vanadium consumption is concentrated in sectors where strength, toughness, and weldability must be delivered together. The following industries represent the principal demand segments:
Construction and infrastructure. High-strength rebar and structural sections for bridges, high-rise buildings, and seismic-resistant design rely on vanadium micro-alloying to achieve the required yield strength grades while maintaining bendability and weldability on site.
Pipeline and energy. Linepipe steels for oil and gas transmission, particularly grades requiring high yield strength and low-temperature toughness, use vanadium alongside niobium and titanium to meet API-specified mechanical properties.
Automotive and transportation. Lightweighting initiatives in automotive body-in-white and chassis components drive demand for HSLA grades that use vanadium to achieve higher strength without increasing gauge thickness.
Tool and die steel. High-speed steels and cold-work tool steels use higher vanadium levels to form hard vanadium carbides that confer wear resistance and red hardness during cutting or forming operations.
Rail and heavy machinery. Railway rails and wear-resistant plate for mining equipment benefit from vanadium's contribution to hardness and fatigue resistance under repeated loading.

What Packing Options Are Available for Ferro Vanadium?
Ferro vanadium is a dense, hard material that is typically supplied in solid lump or compacted briquette form. Standard export packing configurations are designed to protect the alloy from moisture and mechanical damage during ocean freight and inland transport.
Steel drums. A common option for smaller lot sizes, typically on the order of several hundred kilograms net per drum. Drums are sealed and palletized for forklift handling.
Jumbo bags (FIBC / tonne bags). For bulk shipments, material is loaded into one-tonne or half-tonne flexible intermediate bulk containers. Bags are normally fitted with discharge spouts or lifting loops according to the receiver's unloading equipment.
Container stuffing. Full-container-load (FCL) shipments are standard for overseas orders. Material is loaded and secured to prevent shifting during transit. Container weight limits and local regulations at the destination port should be confirmed in advance.
