What type of sediment is ferromanganese?

Ferromanganese is not naturally occurring as a sediment; however, ferromanganese nodules (or manganese nodules) are deep-sea sedimentary deposits rich in Mn and Fe.

Composition of Ferromanganese Nodules:

Manganese oxides (~30%)

Iron oxides (~20%)

Trace metals (Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, rare earths)

Silica, clay, and other sediments

Formation Process:

Hydrogenous: Slow precipitation from seawater over millions of years.

Diagenetic: Metal remobilization from sediments via microbial activity.

Hydrothermal: Associated with underwater volcanic activity.

These nodules are of economic interest for deep-sea mining due to their metal content.
