After the invention of hydrogen-oxygen decarburization (AOD) and vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) in the late 1960s, the situation changed completely. Since the production cost of stainless steel has been greatly reduced, the demand for stainless steel has increased accordingly, and the demand for high-carbon ferrochrome has also increased accordingly.

With the continuous progress and popularization and application of stainless steel refining technology, as well as the use of computer-controlled stainless steel production process and raw material selection, the carbon content and chromium content of ferrochromium are not strictly required, so it can be directly used and mined from large reserves. Furnace-grade ferrochrome produced by low-cost low-chromium ferrochrome ore usually contains 6-9% carbon and 50-55% chromium.
