The basic principle of silithermal iron smelting

 

When reducing vanadium oxides with silicon, the reaction proceeds slowly and incompletely due to insufficient heat, and an external heat source is necessary to accelerate the reaction. Generally, ferrosilicon is smelted into ferrovanadium by smelting ferrosilicon in steelmaking electric arc furnace by casting V, O;

In silicothermal reduction, the free energy change of reducing vanadium suboxides with silicon at high temperature is positive, indicating that it is impossible to reduce vanadium suboxides with silicon in acidic medium. In addition, these oxides react with silica to form vanadium silicates from which vanadium is more difficult to re-reduce. Therefore, the addition of lime in the furnace charge has the following functions:

 

(1) It reacts with silicon dioxide to make SiO, and Ca generate stable silicic acid, preventing the formation of vanadium silicate.

 

(2) Reduce the melting point and viscosity of slag, improve the performance of slag, and strengthen the smelting conditions

 

(3) In the presence of calcium oxide, the basicity of the slag is increased to improve the thermodynamic conditions of reduction, thereby making the possibility of thermal reaction more likely.

 

 

In addition, the ability of silicon to reduce low-valent vanadium oxides is not as good as that of carbon at high temperatures. In order to avoid carburization, silicon is used as a reducing agent in the initial stage of reduction in production, and aluminum is used as a reducing agent in the later stage.
