The abundance of silicon in the earth's crust is 27.7%, ranking second among all elements. The most abundant element in the earth's crust, silicon dioxide, SiO2, is formed by combining oxygen and silicon, accounting for 87% of the total mass of the earth's crust.
The soil, stones and sand under our feet, the bricks, tiles, cement, glass and ceramics we use, these substances we often encounter in our daily life are all silicon compounds. Silicon is really an element that can be found all over the world.
The difference between monocrystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon is that when the molten elemental silicon solidifies, silicon atoms are arranged in a diamond lattice to form many crystal nuclei, and if these nuclei grow into grains with the same crystal plane orientation, single crystal silicon is formed.
If these crystal nuclei grow into crystal grains with different crystal plane orientations, polycrystalline silicon is formed.
Silicon has two allotropes, crystalline and amorphous. Crystalline silicon is further divided into monocrystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon, both of which have a diamond lattice, the crystal is hard and brittle with a metallic luster, and can conduct electricity, but its conductivity is lower than that of metals, and it increases with temperature, which has semiconductor properties.
