The Necessity of Producing Silicon for the Chemical Industry
The original production of silicon metal (silicon content is mainly 98.5%) was originally mainly silicon for metallurgy, and the production of metal silicon for chemical use (mainly 99.85% silicon content) has developed since the mid-1990s. The output and export volume increased rapidly.
From 1999 to 2001, the exported chemical silicon reached 22,000 tons, 30,000 tons, and 40,000 tons respectively. In 2001, the chemical silicon exported accounted for more than 40% of the chemical silicon imports. It has begun to join the ranks of countries producing and supplying silicon for chemical use, and the number of enterprises producing silicon for chemical use continues to increase. Since the carbothermal reduction smelting process was fully disclosed in 2002, between 2002 and 2004, the production capacity of metal silicon rose rapidly from 100,000 tons per year to 1.2 million tons.
As a result, the National Development and Reform Commission imposed comprehensive sanctions. In 2006, the actual production of silicon metal fell back to 700,000 tons. In 2006, only Xinjiang Bianshui successfully built the 10,000-ton silicon metal factory, Jingxin Factory. Others have built new silicon factories. Chemical silicon refers to metallic silicon used in the production of organic silicon and polysilicon.
From a global perspective, the consumption of silicon for metallurgy is more than the consumption of silicon for chemical use. The optical fibers in the optical fiber cables widely used in the "information superhighway" are also produced from metallic silicon.
