Metallic Silicon Powder For Silicone Oil

Metallic silicon powder, also known as silicon metal, is not commonly used directly in the production of silicone oil. Instead, silicone oil is typically derived from silicones, which are a class of polymers made from silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen atoms.

Hydrolysis: Silicon metal is reacted with water and a suitable catalyst to undergo hydrolysis, producing silanol (Si-OH) groups.

Polymerization: Silanol groups further condense to form siloxane linkages (Si-O-Si) through a polymerization process, leading to the formation of silicone polymers.

End-capping: The polymerization process is controlled to achieve specific chain lengths. The silicone oil is produced by stopping the polymerization at a point that results in low molecular weight and a more fluid-like consistency.

Purification: The silicone oil is then purified to remove any remaining impurities and unreacted starting materials.
