Silicon Carbide Grit can be used many times over in applications utilizing tumblers (such as rock tumbling). As the media slowly breaks down, adding additional ‘fresh’ media will create a blend of particle sizes for extremely efficient cleaning and polishing.
With a high hardness close to 9.5 on the MOHS scale, it only exceeded by boron carbide and diamond grit. The lower cost of Silicon Carbide Grit makes it ideal for grinding a variety of metals and for other applications such as grinding wheels, ‘sand’ paper, abrasive blasting, lapping compounds, non-skid flooring and stairs, and general polishing and tumbling applications.

Black or green in color, crystal structure, high hardness, strong cutting ability, stable chemical properties, and good thermal conductivity. The microscopic shape is a hexagonal crystal. The Mohs hardness of silicon carbide is 9.2, the Vickers microhardness is 3000--3300 kg/mm2, the Knoop hardness is 2670-2815 kg/mm, and the microhardness is 3300 kg/cubic millimeter.
Among abrasives, it is higher than corundum and second only to diamond, cubic boron nitride and boron carbide. The density is generally considered to be 3.20 g/cm3. The natural packing density of silicon carbide abrasives is between 1.2-1.6 g/mm3, and the specific gravity is 3.20~3.25. Green silicon carbide is made from petroleum coke and high-quality silica as the main raw materials, with salt added as an additive, and smelted at high temperature in a resistance furnace. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, and its mechanical strength is higher than corundum.
