Introduction to the production process of ferrosilicon
Ferrosilicon, also known as FeSi, is an important alloy widely used in steelmaking production. This alloy can give steel the desired properties, including increased hardness, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It is also used in cast iron manufacturing, electronic equipment production and silicon production, etc.
The main raw materials for the production of ferrosilicon are silica sand and coke, as well as iron filings. The first step in the process is to crush the raw materials into small particles. The silica sand is heated to about 2,200°F to remove any water or impurities and ensure that it is in a form suitable for production. The heated silica sand is then mixed with coke and iron filings to form a mixture called charge.
The charge is then introduced into an electric arc furnace and preheated to about 2,000°F to ensure that the material is in the right form for the reaction process. An electric arc furnace is a large insulated container designed to generate high temperatures through electricity. In the furnace, the charge is melted, a chemical reaction occurs, and the coke reduces the silica to silicon and carbon monoxide gas. The iron filings are also oxidized, and the silicon and iron combine to form ferrosilicon.
