Products Description
The addition of chromium to steel can significantly improve the oxidation resistance of steel and increase the corrosion resistance of steel. Chromium is contained in many steels with special physical and chemical properties.
Chromium in steel is added with ferrochrome. High-carbon ferrochrome is used as an alloying agent for ball steel (0.5%-1.45%Cr), tool steel, die steel (5%-12%Cr) and high-speed steel (3.8%-4.4%Cr), which can improve the quenching of steel. Permeability, increase the wear resistance and hardness of steel. Adding chromium to cast iron can increase hardness and improve wear resistance, and 0.5% to 1.0% chromium can improve its mechanical properties.
High-carbon ferrochrome and charge-grade ferrochrome are widely used as charge materials for smelting stainless steel (AOD or VOD method) to reduce production costs. Medium and low-carbon ferrochromium is used to produce medium and low-carbon structural steel, carburizing steel, gears, high-pressure blower blades, valve plates, etc. Micro-carbon ferrochromium is used in the production of stainless steel, acid-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel and electric heating alloys.
The abundance of chromium in the earth's crust is 0.035%, but the resulting chromium ore contains high chromium. The chromite resources in the nearly north-south fold belts on the earth account for more than 95% of the world's total, and the chromium resources in the Precambrian fold belts running through eastern Africa account for 94% of the world's total. The Ural Variscian fold belt accounts for about 2%, and the Alpine fold belt accounts for about 2% of the world's total.
The geological conditions for chromium ore formation in China are not ideal, and no north-south chromite belt has been found in the Cambrian geological region. The chromite deposits in Tibet-Yunnan belong to the Alpine fold belt; the chromite deposits in Xinjiang-Gansu and Qinghai-Inner Mongolia are in the Hercynian nearly east-west fold belt; none of them have the conditions to form super-large deposits.
The main chromium-bearing mineral of industrial interest is chromium spinel, often mistakenly called chromite. There are three most useful chromium spinel minerals: magnesia chromite (Mg, Fe) Cr2O4, hard chrome spinel (Mg, Fe) (Cr, Al) 2O4 and aluminum chromite Fe (Cr, Al) 2O4.

The largest user of chromium ore is the ferroalloy industry, accounting for about 80% of the total output of chromium ore. In the chrome ore market, it is called metallurgical grade chrome ore. High-quality metallurgical grade chromium ore requires Cr2O3>48%, S<0.1%, P<0.1%, Cr2O3: FeO>3, which is used to produce ferrochromium containing Cr>70%. Due to the decrease of chrome-rich ore, the ore with low chromium-iron ratio is relatively increasing. They can only be used to smelt charge-grade ferrochrome.
