Products Description
Chromium cast iron refers to re-adding chromium to iron to change the physical structure and chemical properties of iron and make it more widely used. The amount of chromium added is different, and the chemical properties of the formed chromium cast iron are also different. According to the content of chromium, it can be divided into low chromium cast iron, medium chromium cast iron and high chromium cast iron.
Chromium cast iron was developed almost at the same time as nickel-hard cast iron. Due to the need for electric furnace smelting, the development has been slow. After the 1960s, due to the wide application of electric furnace smelting, high chromium cast iron has been greatly developed.
In order to improve the wear resistance of cast iron and prevent graphite structure from appearing in cast iron, a certain amount of carbide-forming element chromium is added to cast iron to form low-chromium cast iron. The chromium content of low-chromium cast iron is usually in the range (mass fraction) of 2% to 5%. In order to avoid graphite, the amount of silicon should be limited. In addition, in order to adjust the structure of low-chromium cast iron and further improve wear resistance, a certain amount of alloying elements such as Mo, Cu, and Ni can also be added to low-chromium cast iron.
Due to the small addition of chromium and other alloying elements, the structure of low-chromium cast iron is not much different from that of ordinary white cast iron. Figure 2 is the Fe-C-Cr equilibrium phase diagram with a chromium content (mass fraction) of 2%. It can be seen that the addition of chromium does not add new constituent phases in the phase diagram, but the positions of some characteristic points have changed relative to the Fe-C phase diagram without chromium.
Compared with ordinary white cast iron, the carbide of low-chromium white cast iron is alloy cementite (Fe, Cr) 3C containing a small amount of chromium, and the Vickers hardness also increases from 840-1100HV to 1000-1230HV. The carbide morphology is also slightly improved, and the matrix structure varies according to the heat treatment state, which can be pearlite, sorbite, martensite or their mixed structure, and may be accompanied by a small amount of austenite. As the carbon content in low-chromium cast iron increases, the number of carbides in the structure increases, and the hardness of cast iron increases slightly.
The as-cast structure of low chromium cast iron is usually eutectic carbide + pearlite.
The chemical composition of low chromium cast iron can be adjusted accordingly according to the working conditions of the parts. As the carbon content increases, the number of carbides in low-chromium cast iron increases (and exists in the matrix in the form of a network), the hardness increases, the toughness decreases, and the working conditions with greater impact (such as ball mills with larger diameters use low-chromium Cast iron balls) are prone to breakage, and their carbon content should be appropriately reduced. Figure 3 shows the relationship between the carbon content of low-chromium cast iron and its hardness and relative wear resistance. In addition, with the increase of chromium content, the morphology and distribution of carbides are improved, which increases the impact toughness, hardness, fatigue resistance and impact wear resistance. Figure 4 shows the effect of chromium on the properties of low chromium cast iron.
